Chapter 03 · 5 min read
A day in the life of the routine
What happens between 08:47 and the merge: idempotency, one pull request and exactly one commit.
At 08:47 in Heilbronn a Claude routine starts in the cloud. It has one job: add exactly one tile to the island and make exactly one commit. Here is what happens in those few minutes.
1 · Is today already done?
npm run day -- status
{ "today": "2026-10-12", "day": 14, "lastDay": 13, "done": false }
If done is true, the routine stops without touching anything. Running twice is harmless – the second run finds today's day already recorded.
2 · Read the island
npm run day -- plan
The plan is the routine's decision sheet: counts, the people who live on the island, the last seven days of lore, every legal change with a few good tiles for each – and the director's recommendation.
3 · Choose and write
Claude picks one change that makes a good next line in the story and writes the lore for it – one sentence, present tense, no links, no real people or brands. Then it applies the change:
npm run day -- apply --action lighthouse --x 36 --y 30 \
--lore "A white tower goes up on the eastern rocks; tonight a light will turn over the sea."
The code validates everything again. An illegal tile, a duplicate name or a lore line with a link is rejected – after two rejected attempts the routine hands the day to the director with npm run day -- auto.
4 · One pull request, one commit
The routine runs the full check (npm run verify), commits on a claude/daily-… branch and opens a pull request. When continuous integration is green, a workflow merges it with squash – so main receives exactly one commit per day:
Day 14: Lighthouse on the eastern rocks
A white tower goes up on the eastern rocks; tonight a light will turn over the sea.

The merge only goes through if the pull request touches nothing but world/world.json, world/isle.svg and LOGBOOK.md. Code changes are made by humans, in separate pull requests.
5 · The website grows too
Every merge redeploys this site. The island you see in 3D, the map and the logbook are all rendered from the world.json of that commit.
